[ 2010-02-05 comments | 435 views ] The Investigative Journalism Center (CIN) launched the Journalists for Human Rights Media Campaign on Friday, 5 February, during the Investigative Journalists Club debate. Through this project, we will try to raise the awareness of the public opinion about the violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms and to sensitize decision-making factors that must take action to change the situation. The CIN team sets to identify the areas in which human rights are seriously and frequently violated and to investigate concrete cases, to bring them in the attention of the public opinion, and to determine the authorities to change their attitude, to amend the legislation, if necessary, and to hold accountable all those responsible for the violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms. National and international reports and studies show that human rights are seriously violated in various areas in Moldova. Proof in this sense is also the high number of convictions of Moldova by ECHR. This also results from the citizens’ lack of knowledge about their own rights and the law; they many times do not know where to turn to for help, or are afraid to do so, or simply do not believe that their problems can be solved. The CIN team that is composed of investigative journalists will monitor the situation in various areas, how national human rights programs are implemented, will build partnerships with nongovernmental organizations that are active in the human rights area in order to identify and contribute to solving serious situations that affect the citizens and to encourage them to declare such cases to the empowered bodies. The investigations produced within the campaign will be published in the national and local press. All cases investigated by the journalists will be monitored until their finalization, so will the reactions of the empowered bodies. The most serious problems related to the violation of human rights will be debated during the meetings of the Investigative Journalism Club. A lawyer engaged in the project will provide assistance to the journalists in investigating and documenting their articles. The Journalists for Human Rights Media Campaign is implemented by CIN with the support of the US Embassy in Moldova. Investigative Journalism Center team |
